AAPG Student Chapter of University of Malaya Organized a Field Trip to Northwest Borneo (Sarawak and Brunei) July 30, 2007

UM Field Trip to Sarawak & Brunei 2On May 4, 2007, 30 students of AAPG Student Chapter of University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia, came to Miri for 3 days field trip. This group of students, were accompanied by 2 lecturers Prof. Dr. Wan Hasiah Abdullah and Prof. Denis Tan. The field trip itself was led by Shell geologists: Navpreet Singh and Govarthanan Gangatharan (Shell Malaysia) and Herman Darman (Shell Brunei, who also the AAPG Asia Pacific region president).

During this 3 days trip, the students went to observe a number of excellent outcrops in Northwest Borneo, visited Shell office in Miri to see some presentations, and also visited onshore drilling site in Brunei. The students learnt a number of petroleum geology aspects from this trip. This trip was ended on May 6, and the students flew safely back to Kuala Lumpur. The organizers and participants of this trip would like to thank Shell Malaysia as the sole sponsor for this program.

Topic 1, Sequence Stratigraphy and its Applications in the Field

china1.jpgchina2.jpgPingping Li, the vice president of CUP06 SC of AAPG, China, give an outline of Sequence Stratigraphy, reviewed the history and the latest progresses of this subject (Fig. right). He proposed that, to identify sequence boundaries is critical to set up a framework of the strata in a studied area. These boundaries can be recognized by several characteristics, especially in the field. As an example, the field work in the West of Sichuan Basin, as well as in the front of Longmen Shan Mountain, West China, is introduced (Fig. right).

University of Malaya Student Chapter – 2006 Report March 12, 2007

On August 26th, American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Student Chapter University of Malaya organized a Career and Technical Talk with the theme “Frontier of Geologists”. This premier event was held in association with Kelab Geologi Universiti Malaya (KAGUM) at the Geology Lecture Hall. More than 60 students, including post-graduate students from the Department of Geology, University of Malaya and 7 students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia took part in this event, with talks given by representatives from Baker Hughes, PETRONAS, Schlumberger, Shell and Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Malaysia.


Dr Wan Haziah, head department of UM Geology Dept. received a token of appreciation from Lee Seng Keong, Student Chapter President.

This event is the first of many activities planned for the current academic year by AAPG Student Chapter of UM. Registrations started as early as 8.00 a.m. and each participant was given souvenirs during the registration. In her keynote address, Professor Dr. Wan Hasiah Abdullah, the Head of Geology Department, congratulated to the AAPG Student Chapter’s members for successfully organizing the event, and officially opened the Career and Technical Talk at exactly 9.00 a.m.

The morning session was started by Mr. Adriaan Bal, a representative from Baker Hughes, who gave two talks – Career with Baker Hughes and New Advance in Borehole Logging and Imaging. This was followed by presentation from Mr. Md. Yazid Mansor (PETRONAS Carigali) entitled Career with PETRONAS and Life on Platform. This was followed by a morning tea break during which students engaged the speakers in discussion.

Bangladesh Students in AAPG Perth conference February 9, 2007

There were 2 students from Bangladesh who went to Perth for the AAPG International Conference in November 2006. These students were sponsored by AAPG Asia Pacific region. During the conference they got the opportunity to attend technical talks, poster sessions, and meet AAPG leadership. ugm_aapgsc1.jpgThis program’s summary is earthquake with 5.9 SR (BMG Indonesia version) / 6.2 (USGS version) shocked Yogyakarta on May 27th 2006 at 5.56 am. Over than 5000 civil death because of this earthquake, while more than 30,000 civil have been injured and 200,000 left homeless. AAPG SC UGM try to participate to give relief effort for the earthquake victims in Yogyakarta and its surrounding. With sense of solidarity, AAPG UGM SC held 3 activities for earthquake relief.

SEAPEX Leadership Conference – 2006 October 17, 2006

Group FotoThe Indonesian Student Chapter of AAPG organized a Leadership Conference in Depok (south of Jakarta) on 15-17 September 2006. The conference was sponsored by SEAPEX (South East Asia Exploration Society), an associate organization of AAPG.
There were 75 students from 12 student chapter in Indonesia attended the meeting. AAPG sponsored 2 students from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to participate this conference and to give them an opportunity to see the activities run by the Indonesian students.
AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, Craig Shipp, gave a talk on geohazards in this conference.
